A Great Life - romantic short story

This short love story named A Great Life be whith us to Enjoy and Learn more more love stories
, inspiring , fiction ,

I've heard the saying, "The best gift parents can ever give to their children is to love each other."
I've had the pleasure of witnessing the truth of this statement for over 40 years. From as far back as I can remember my Mom and Dad were a team. A great partnership. They were more than just a partnership. It was as if they were one person.
Sure, they argued, but there was never any doubt in our minds that any disagreements would be worked through and resolved. Mom and Dad began their married life poor, but they worked hard and over the years, built a very successful business. They each had their strengths and weaknesses, but the way they worked together, you never saw the weaknesses, just the strengths.
Dad was the outgoing, more public person with whom people met and fell in love with right away. Everyone knew Dad! Then, when they got to meet Mom, they felt the exact same way about her as well. Mom, although not at all shy, was more comfortable being the person behind the scenes. More details oriented, she ran the books and according to Dad, was the one who really made the business work.
The biggest lesson about love and marriage that my mom and dad taught us kids was how to talk "about" your spouse. Have you ever heard husbands and wives when speaking to others make unkind remarks about their spouses? It's one of those things people just seem to do. Sure, they're "only kidding" or maybe they are not. But words matter. And words teach, whether positively or negatively.
You would never hear such a thing from my mom and dad. Dad always speaks of Mom in the most complimentary, glowing terms. Mom does the same of him.
This lesson made such an impression on me. I still remember when I was age twelve and we were installing carpets in our home. The crew boss was one of those stereotypical beer guzzling, hard-living guys, who would have probably belonged to Ralph Kramden's Raccoon Lodge from the old Honeymooner's TV show. For lunch, my folks bought pizza for the crew. Dad went to talk with the boss about the job. I was around the corner listening.
The boss said, "This is an expensive job. Women will really spend your money, won't they?"
Dad responded, "Well, I'll tell you. When they were right there with you before you had any money, it's a pleasure to do anything for them you possibly can after you have some money."
This wasn't the answer the carpet installer expected to hear. He was looking for negative banter about wives which, to him, was natural.
He tried again, "But, gee, they'll really play off that and spend all they can, won't they?"
Dad replied, as I knew he would, "Hey, when they're the reason you're successful, you want them to do the things they enjoy. There's no greater pleasure."
Strike two.
The crew boss tried one more time, "And they'll take that as far as they can, huh?"
Dad responded, "She's the best thing that ever happened to me. I'd do anything to make her happy."
I was trying not to laugh.
I knew he wanted Dad to give in just a little bit and say, "Yeah, I guess that's true."
But it wouldn't happen… Not in a million years!
Finally, the installer gave up and went back to work, probably shaking his head in bewilderment. Witnessing my dad in that moment taught me more about loving and respecting your wife than anything he could ever have told me about the subject.
Mom and Dad are now retired and enjoying their life together, just hanging out, reading, and visiting their children and grandchildren. They recently celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary.
They still hold hands, and they are more in love than ever.
Throughout the years, whenever Mom would remind me that I should be looking to get married, I'd say, "Ma, I have plenty of time."
She'd jokingly reply that I don't have "that" much time.
My Dad would then look at me in that wisdom-filled, city streets bred way of his and say, "Hey, you take all the time you need. If you marry someone just half the woman your mother is, you'll have a great life."
I should only be so lucky.

The Lacey wants to find a cure for her dog sick, so I decided to look for answer on the Internet, there was a person is lost for several years, he offers her help and advice
Lacey
decided to build site on the net to find out her dog treat Many people commented on how soothing it was and so this had not only come to be a site to learn more about her dog's problems, but a spiritual site as well.

Many people who were hurting inside came over to chat to Lacey. They would have wonderful conversations about this and discuss possible ways to help themselves by seeking something else to look up to in life. Lacey made some great friendships, but she met few who had a situation similar to hers regarding her dog. She finally had to make the decisions herself.

In the midst of all of the great conversations she found someone on the internet that looked like he could use a friend. She left him a nice, uplifting note. He responded back on how appreciative he was of that. He had also lost someone very dear to his heart and they discussed their lives. The conversations grew longer and more frequent. They had become familiar with each other's lives and a source of comfort to each other.

They decided to meet and the rest is history. It has been fours years and they visit each other often and talk several times a day. They have become more than just "online friends". Their situations are complicated so moving closer together at this point is not an option. They maintain their love for each other in spite of the distance. An unusual kind of relationship? Oh yes, but it was not planned and turned into an unexpected pleasure and joy in both of their lives. Sometimes the best things in life come to us "unplanned". Their love is based on many great attributes, such as trust, faith, devotion and hope. The love of Lacey's life sums up his feelings for her quite clearly, "I will wait forever for you because I love you and you are my darling angel."'

Ghost Love - short love story

Back in 1989, being a fresh Psychology graduate, I landed a job in the personnel department in one of the government offices in Quezon City. A male co-worker, Jun, who was eleven years older than me became one of my friends while working there. Jun was kind, loving and romantic. He was the sole breadwinner of his family. His parents and relatives liked me a lot. As I was single and unattached, he courted me in 1990. I accepted his marriage proposal during the latter part of that year.
My parents did not approve of our relationship and during the first quarter of 1991, my parents made me quit my job. My dad was a military man and he threatened Jun to stay away from me. To make our long story short, I left my job because of my family. I lost touch with Jun as I kept myself busy with the family business. Basically, I went on with my life and tried to forget about him.
In the morning of June 2nd 1994, I received a telegram from his aunt saying that Jun had died the day before. Shocked, I crumpled the short note and phoned his aunt for confirmation in a hurry. She told me that after we parted, Jun resigned from his job and drank heavily everyday. He neglected his health as well as his body. Pneumonia caused his sudden death.
"Even up till his remaining hours, all he wanted was to see you. During his final moments while suffering from delirium, he even told us that he still loves you very much." Jun's aunt said.

Sadly, my parents wouldn't allow me to go to his wake. I mourned quietly inside my room. It even came to a point where I tried to convince myself that he wasn't dead.
In January 1995 just before my birthday, Jun visited me in a dream. I dreamed that I was inside a hospital room. I was wearing a hospital gown and I was sitting at the foot of my bed. Jun suddenly appeared before me, clothed in bright lights. We communicated mentally. I told him it wasn't true that he was gone. He replied that I must accept the fact that he was already dead but it didn't mean that he was leaving me.
"I will always be beside you, guarding you." he said.
I cried saying, "I'm sorry I didn't have the guts to fight for our relationship."
He comforted me and soothed me by shrouding me with his bright light. The bliss I felt was interrupted by a voice calling his name.
"It's time for me to go." he told me.
"But what about me?" I asked, tears in my eyes.
"I will always be here for you." he replied.
"And I will be waiting for you there. Don't ever forget that I love you very much."
After saying this, he vanished before my eyes. I woke up crying. After that incident, I finally began to accept his death. Whenever I'm depressed, I feel his presence beside me. I know that somehow somewhere out there, he's still waiting patiently for me.

Love does not forget -love stories

with new  love romance story in our blog We invite you to be with us. To read more free and online stories about love and romance .

Love does not forget   part 1
After two years of marriage and three years of courtship, love of the reasons the former is now the reasons for anxiety and insomnia
I am a sentimental woman and extremely sensitive and exquisite when it comes to relationships and feelings, I yearn for romantic moments, as though a little boy yearning for candy. However, my husband is a complete contrast of me. His lack of sensitivity and above all, inability to bring romantic moments into our marriage has disheartened me about love.
One day, I finally decided to tell him my decision about wanting a divorce.
"Why?" he asked, shocked.
"I am tired, there aren't reasons for everything in this world", I answered.
He kept silent the whole night, seemingly to be in deep thoughts as he smoked through the night. My feeling of disappointment became intense. I felt that if he is a man who can't even express his detainment, what else can I hope from him?
He finally he asked, “What can I do to change your mind?"
It’s often said that it's hard to change a person's personality, and I guess at that moment in time, I have started losing faith in him.
Looking deep into his eyes, I slowly answered, "I have a question for you. If you can find the answer in my heart, I will change my mind. If we are in a scenario where I love a flower on a mountain cliff but we are both sure that making you pick the flower for me will cause certain death. Will you do it for me?"
He said, "I will give you your answer tomorrow..." My heart sank at listening to his response.
The next morning, he was not around. However, I saw a piece of paper with his handwriting underneath a glass of warm milk. It goes like this...
Dear,
"I would not pick that flower for you but please allow me to explain the reasons."
This first line already broke my heart. I continued reading.
"You are hopeless with computers and always mess up the programs in the PC and end up crying in front of screen. I have to save my fingers so that I can help you restore the programs.

Love does not forget      part 2

You always left the house keys behind at home. I have to save my legs to rush home to open the door for you. You love travelling but always lose your way in a new city. I have to save my eyes to lead you the way. You always have cramps whenever you it’s the time of the month again. I have to save my palm so that I can calm the cramps at your tummy.
You like to stay indoors and I am worried that you will be infected by infantile autism. I have to save my mouth to tell you jokes and stories to cure you of your boredom. You always use the computers for long hours and that is not healthy for your eyes. I have to save my eyes so that when we grow older, I can help to clip your nails and help to remove those annoying white hairs. I will hold your hand, stroll down the beach and enjoy the warm sunshine and beautiful sand together... I will also tell you the colour of the flowers, which is just like the glow on your youthful face...
Thus my dear, before I am sure there is someone who loves you more than I do... I would not pick the flower and die… "
My tears drop onto the letter and smudged the ink of his handwriting. I resumed reading...
"And now dear, you have finished reading my answer. If you are satisfied with these answers, please open the door of our house. I am standing right there with your favorite bread and fresh milk.”
I rushed to pull open the door. I came upon his anxious face with the milk and bread in his hands. By now, I was sure that no one will ever love me as much as him, and I have decided to leave the flower alone.
And so that’s life or some might say love. When one is surrounded by love, the feeling of excitement fade away and one tends to ignore that true love lies in between peace and dullness. Love shows up in any form even in very little and corny forms. It has never been a model. It could be in the most incurious form like flowers.
In comparison, romantic moments are only the buckish formed on the surface of a relationship. Underneath the surface, the pillar of true love stands and that's our life. I hope everyone enjoys reading this story about… Love.
Sometimes, we do not cherish the things around us and ask for more. Perhaps we should all sit down and think about what we already have and learn to appreciate them better.

the Fear -love stories

welcome
Sometimes fear comes with love, in many of the stories of love one feels intimidated or both lovers love another world, has special feelings , Let's read the new short story about love .
The teacher asked the pupils what is the fear, the answer was mostly either the fear of kidnapping or death...etc
She wanted to hear from someone new and hence, asked the kid that never speaks at the back of the class to To say what is the fear ?
He said,
Sometimes when I lie in bed at night while my father is off fighting fires somewhere, I'm afraid that the floor above him will cave in and I'll never get to see my daddy again.
I'm also afraid when my mom is off bartending late into the night that a man will assault her and she won't be the same mommy I once new.
I'm also afraid that my baby sister will roll over while she's sleeping and suffocate herself.
I lie in bed thinking about this stuff every night.
That's why I don't get annoyed when my baby sister cries in the middle of the night or when I see headlights in the driveway at twelve o'clock meaning my mom is home late or when my dad calls at eleven because he forgot to say goodnight to me my mom and sister.
On top of anything else, that is my biggest fear."
When he finished reading his journal he looked up to see all of his classmates with tears in their eyes. He smiled and said,
Well... what did you expect?

Nina couldn't be happier then she was this very moment. He had held her hand and he had kissed her. Sure, it wasn't a all out french, I'm going to die if I can't have you kiss she had read in the romance novels she hid under her bed at home, but still, a kiss
!

Midnight was Grace's curfew, so it was Nina's too. Grace and her had gabbed until they both fell asleep. They hadn't bothered to put PJ's on so Nina got up to take a shower and change. Breakfast would have to wait.

Grace was dead to world so Nina went about getting ready for the day knowing Grace would come downstairs only when her mom yelled at her to get her butt downstairs. That would be about 10am so Nina knew she still had an hour.

After her shower and some toast she sat down on the couch in the living room and looked around smiling. "It is so good to be here" she thought. The family cat Pluto mewwed hello. For a big tomcat his meow was like a mouse. Nina heard Grace's brother getting out of bed upstairs. She couldn't wait to see him. Keith was easy going and loved Nina almost as much as she loved him.

"Hey cuzzzzz", he said as he gave her a big bear hug. "I'll get with as soon as I've had breakfast okay? I'm starving!"

Nina just laughed and decided she would take a walk out outside.

As soon as she stepped outside she heard a familiar sound. It was a Yamaha 3-wheeler on the black top down by the almost mile long driveway. It was too early for Dave to be coming over, she thought. But her heart skipped a beat anyway. Sure enough the 3-wheeler was coming up the driveway. It was Dave alright.
He drove up to her and turned off his 3-wheeler. "I didn't expect to see you so early," she almost screeched. He hadn't mentioned anything about stopping over today. "I forgot Grace's number
so I came over to ask if you wanted to go riding tonight. Jeff called me and told me he wanted to go up to Lake Noquebay and back and said Grace could ride with him, if you two wanted to go?" He asked. He was blushing. Nina thought he was adorable when he blushed. "I'll ask Grace but I'm sure she'll want to go." She replied. Grace loved riding so she was sure she would want to go but wanted to ask her first. I'll kill her if she says "no" too, thought Nina.

Dave said he's stop by again in a couple hours and left just as fast he came.

Nina ran into the house, tripped up the stairs and jumped on Grace's bed. "Get up slacker! Dave just came and wants us to go riding tonight!" She yelled joyously.

This vacation was going to be Nina's best summer yet. It was going to be her summer of first love.

Short Love Story - Inspirational short stories

Read in our blog more ispiraing stories ( love , child , kids , funny ... stories)
this is inspirational love story we hope nice time whith  it .

One night when Joe was driving back home he was quite upset because of his miserable condition and his failure to bring up his family in prosperity and proper care.
He had been unemployed since the Levis factory closed, but Joe did not want to abandon his birthplace where he had buried his parents. On his way back, he came across this old woman who was waiting in dismay by her car for some one to come and help her. Her car had broken down in the middle of the road.

Joe approached her with a friendly smile on his face but he could see her perplexed. Probably she thought he was going to hurt her. Joe saw that her car had a flat tire only. But for an old woman even that was too much of a burden. In order to make her feel comfortable, Joe asked her to go and sit in the car where it was warm and cozy. He told her his name and soon enough he had changed the tire. She couldn't thank him enough for going out of the way to help her. In order to show her gratitude she asked him how much she owed him, as she couldn't think of the misery that nature would have inflicted on her. He told her if she really wanted to pay him back, then the next time she met someone in peril she could give them a helping hand and while doing so just think of him once. Though it was a cold and depressing day for him, at the end of the day he felt good after helping her.

The lady headed for a small cafe down the road where she halted to catch up on some food. It was a dismal and drab restaurant. A waitress came around to help her. The waitress had a sweet and untiring smile on her face, one that a whole day's hard work couldn't wipe away from her face. The lady noticed the eight months pregnancy of the waitress and even then she was attending to every one without complain. The old lady wondered how someone who had so less could be so giving to a stranger and at that moment she remembered Joe. When the waitress went inside to get her change from a hundred dollar bill, the lady whisked out of the cafe and left a note for the waitress which read, "You don't owe me a thing, I've been there too. Someone once helped me out, the way I'm helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here's what you do. Don't let the chain of love end with you." Tears ran down her cheeks. The waitress went back home to her husband, happy at this windfall. While in bed she wondered how the old lady knew that they were in dire need of financial aid for her delivery, which was due next month. She knew her husband would be highly worried and thus she turned to him and while giving him a soft kiss she whispered to him, "Everything's going to be alright, I love you Joe

taking a chance - short stories about love

This new love short story ( read with us more short love stories , funny short love stories , sad love stories , online short love stories... etc)
taking a chance - short love story

I started using my space of about two years, in fact, did not agree to the all demands of friendship  ... But there is a closer friend to me
One evening when I was logged on, a chat request came through from a very cute looking guy and we started talking. At first, I thought nothing of it as I was involved with another guy and I was hoping to meet him.
Anyway, I had a great time with this guy who was from Africa and we chatted most evenings on msn. I knew he felt something more than friends and I did think maybe I could feel something for him too as we were becoming very close. We had a few lovely conversations on the phone too, but it was too expensive for me and him. I did wish we could take our relationship to another level but the distance and lack of money to travel made it all seem hopeless.
During that period, I had to work long hours and I didnt get to go online as much and we lost touch even though I still very much liked him and cared deeply about him. One evening about 6 months later he informed me that we wouldnt be able to chat anymore because he had found a girl and they had been chatting for some months. I was very upset but I wished him well. I never forgot him and would always ask how it was going with her if we were both online.
Then facebook came along and I spent more time on that than myspace. He requested me on there and about a year later, we start communicating again. The girl had found another boyfriend, but by then, I also had a boyfriend!
I don't remember exactly when we got so close again, but it was when my boyfriend proposed to me that I suddenly realised that I couldnt marry anyone due to my feelings for M. I had to call him and tell him. He said how jealous he had been when he saw my relationship status, he said he still loved me and that he wanted us to meet to see if there would ever be any way that we could be together.
This was a month ago. I am torn between him and my boyfriend of a year. M has a great job there and is ready to settle down and start a family. I am not happy where I am or with my boyfriend. I love M even though we have never met. Our phone bills are huge. I have to fight everyday not to just pick up the phone and call him. An hour on the phone is so expensive and anything less, its impossible to hang up. He calls me when he cant stand it any longer. We sms many times a day. I'm willing to take a chance on him even though we have never met. My friends think I'm crazy.

Silent Love - short love story - free short stories

Hi friends in new short story about love we meet in our blog
read in this blog more stories ( love stories , high schoole stories , short stories for children, short stories by edgar allan poe, short stories in spanish )

 Silent Love
She was not thinking of love, not something important in her life, but love that comes at a time. May come silently .
She was so stout……..with stout persons, sometimes she became so sensitive, as all the characters were immersed in her……she was decent and never brought sadness in anyone’s face, but happiness. She never ever endeavored for those which were of others. Always was appearing with a sweet smile on her face, whether how much dismal she was……she sacrificed her whole likenesses for others………………and probably for this even she lost her love. Whether her destiny brought her to her valentine but also adversity took her away from her love and from this world.
The story begins from here;
“Oh mum we’re getting late, hurry up” she shouted
“Yeah, just coming don’t impassionate” Mum said…..
Actually, she was going in another city for attending the wedding of her cousin.
At last they set out for attending wedding.
By the next dawn she arrived in that city, where some one was waiting for her……..
After arriving there, all persons turned busy in the chore and some in the practice for dace.
All cousins decided to for buying CDs of their favourite songs. In evening they set out for shopping and outing. After shopping they turned so hungry and tired. They went in a restaurant for dinner.
“Oh no, I’ve forgotten my CDs in that restaurant and I’ve also written my address and contact no: in that CDs” She said.
“Shit! If anyone would’ve picked your CDs, so….” Her 1 cousin said with exasperation.
“So, lets go for picking them” her cousins said.
When they entered in restaurant, so she saw………….and stared and he also.
They both lost in their eyes. He came toward her, simultaneously when she saw her CDs in his hand, she snatched and ran away…..
She did not want to arouse her feelings of love, but his love was wishing her.
Perhaps they both were avoiding from, and that’s why couldn’t express their feelings about each other. When she returned, she intended to forget him but all in vain. She again thought and thought, his condition was also such like her. Whether they did not want to show their love to each other, but they couldn’t stop their selves from missing and loving each other.
Next day she again went at the same restaurant and had forgotten some thing their,
But when she went again for picking she found that same guy, as he was waiting for her.
This case remained continue for four days. The things which she used to forget there in restaurant for seeing only a blink of him, she remained them unopened and marked them safe in her closet. On the fifth day, when she was setting out for the same restaurant, there a misfortunate came between both of them, which brought her far from his world.
During crossing the road a red big container hitted she and she died in the victim of that accident. On one side she was eagering to say only one word and also hearing from him that I LOVE YOU. On other hand he was awaiting for her. For three days she continuously used to come in that restaurant but she couldn’t. Next day, she reminded her address which was written in her CD and set out for her house. After arriving there when he got a wind about her so he offed her wits. She went to her room and when he opened her closet so he found her all things unopened which she used to forget there in restaurant. Actually he had kept his lo in inside those things, but she couldn’t read them. He cried and cried and burst into tears. Their silent love remained silent.

part 1 - the love letter

Iwas always a little in awe of Great-aunt Stephina Roos. Indeed, as children we were all frankly terrified of her. The fact that she did not live with the family, preferring her tiny cottage and solitude to the comfortable but rather noisy household where we were brought up-added to the respectful fear in which she was held. We used to take it in turn to carry small delicacies which my mother had made down from the big house to the little cottage where Aunt Stephia and an old colored maid spent their days. Old Tnate Sanna would open the door to the rather frightened little messenger and would usher him-or her - into the dark voor-kamer, where the shutters were always closed to keep out the heat and the flies. There we would wait, in trembling but not altogether unpleasant. She was a tiny little woman to inspire so much veneration. She was always dressed in black, and her dark clothes melted into the shadows of the voor-kamer and made her look smaller than ever. But you felt. The moment she entered. That something vital and strong and somehow indestructible had come in with her, although she moved slowly, and her voice was sweet and soft. She never embraced us. She would greet us and take out hot little hands in her own beautiful cool one, with blue veins standing out on the back of it, as though the white skin were almost too delicate to contain them. Tante Sanna would bring in dishes of sweet, sweet, sticky candy, or a great bowl of grapes or peaches, and Great-aunt Stephina would converse gravely about happenings on the farm ,and, more rarely, of the outer world. When we had finished our sweetmeats or fruit she would accompany us to the stoep, bidding us thank our mother for her gift and sending quaint, old-fashioned messages to her and the Father. Then she would turn and enter the house, closing the door behind, so that it became once more a place of mystery. As I grew older I found, rather to my surprise, that I had become genuinely fond of my aloof old great-aunt. But to this day I do not know what strange impulse made me take George to see her and to tell her, before I had confided in another living soul, of our engagement. To my astonishment, she was delighted. "An Englishman,"she exclaimed."But that is splendid, splendid. And you,"she turned to George,"you are making your home in this country? You do not intend to return to England just yet?" She seemed relieved when she heard that George had bought a farm near our own farm and intended to settle in South Africa. She became quite animated, and chattered away to him. After that I would often slip away to the little cottage by the mealie lands. Once she was somewhat disappointed on hearing that we had decided to wait for two years before getting married, but when she learned that my father and mother were both pleased with the match she seemed reassured. Still, she often appeared anxious about my love affair, and would ask questions that seemed to me strange, almost as though she feared that something would happen to destroy my romance. But I was quite unprepared for her outburst when I mentioned that George thought of paying a lightning visit to England before we were married."He must not do it,"she cried."Ina, you must not let him go. Promise me you will prevent him."she was trembling all over. I did what I could to console her, but she looked so tired and pale that I persuaded her to go to her room and rest, promising to return the next day. When I arrived I found her sitting on the stoep. She looked lonely and pathetic, and for the first time I wondered why no man had ever taken her and looked after her and loved her. Mother had told me that Great-aunt Stephina had been lovely as a young girl, and although no trace of that beauty remained, except perhaps in her brown eyes, yet she looked so small and appealing that any man, one felt, would have wanted to protect her. She paused, as though she did not quite know how to begin. Then she seemed to give herself, mentally, a little shake. "You must have wondered ", she said, "why I was so upset at the thought of young George's going to England without you. I am an old woman, and perhaps I have the silly fancies of the old, but I should like to tell you my own love story, and then you can decide whether it is wise for your man to leave you before you are married." "I was quite a young girl when I first met Richard Weston. He was an Englishman who boarded with the Van Rensburgs on the next farm, four or five miles from us. Richard was not strong. He had a weak chest, and the doctors had sent him to South Africa so that the dry air could cure him. He taught the Van Rensburg children, who were younger than I was, though we often played together, but he did this for pleasure and not because he needed money.
the love letter part 2

We loved one another from the first moment we met, though we did not speak of our love until the evening of my eighteenth birthday. All our friends and relatives had come to my party, and in the evening we danced on the big old carpet which we had laid down in the barn. Richard had come with the Van Rensburgs, and we danced together as often as we dared, which was not very often, for my father hated the Uitlanders. Indeed, for a time he had quarreled with Mynheer Van Rensburg for allowing Richard to board with him, but afterwards he got used to the idea, and was always polite to the Englishman, though he never liked him. "That was the happiest birthday of my life, for while we were resting between dances Richard took me outside into the cool, moonlit night, and there, under the stars ,he told me he loved me and asked me to marry him. Of course I promised I would, for I was too happy to think of what my parents would say, or indeed of anything except Richard was not at our meeting place as he had arranged. I was disappointed but not alarmed, for so many things could happen to either of us to prevent out keeping our tryst. I thought that next time we visited the Van Ransburgs, I should hear what had kept him and we could plan further meetings… "So when my father asked if I would drive with him to Driefontein I was delighted. But when we reached the homestead and were sitting on the stoep drinking our coffee, we heard that Richard had left quite suddenly and had gone back to England. His father had died, and now he was the heir and must go back to look after his estates. "I do not remember very much more about that day, except that the sun seemed to have stopped shining and the country no longer looked beautiful and full of promise, but bleak and desolate as it sometimes does in winter or in times of drought. Late that afternoon, Jantje, the little Hottentot herd boy, came up to me and handed me a letter , which he said the English baas had left for me. It was the only love letter I ever received, but it turned all my bitterness and grief into a peacefulness which was the nearest I could get, then, to happiness. I knew Richard still loved me, and somehow, as long as I had his letter, I felt that we could never be really parted, even if he were in England and I had to remain on the farm. I have it yet, and though I am an old, tired woman, it still gives me hope and courage." "I must have been a wonderful letter, Aunt Stephia,"I said The old lady came back from her dreams of that far-off romance."Perhaps," she said, hesitating a little, "perhaps, my dear, you would care to read it ?" "I should love to , Aunt Stephia,"I said gently She rose at once and tripped into the house as eagerly as a young girl. When she came back she handed me a letter, faded and yellow with age, the edges of the envelope worn and frayed as though it had been much handled. But when I came to open it I found that the seal was unbroken. "Open it ,open it,"said Great-aunt Stephia, and her voice was shaking I broke the seal and read. It was not a love letter in the true sense of the word, but pages of the minutest directions of how"my sweetest Phina"was to elude her father's vigilance, creep down to the drift at night and there meet Jantje with a horse which would take her to Smitsdorp. There she was to go to "my true friend, Henry Wilson",who would give her money and make arrangements for her to follow her lover to Cape Town and from there to England ," where, my love, we can he be married at once. But if, my dearest, you are not sure that you can face lift with me in a land strange to you, then do not take this important step, for I love you too much to wish you the smallest unhappiness. If you do not come, and if I do not hear from you, then I shall know that you could never be happy so far from the people and the country which you love. If, however, you feel you can keep your promise to me, but are of too timid and modest a journey to England unaccompanied, then write to me, and I will, by some means, return to fetch my bride." I read no further. "But Aunt Phina!"I gasped. "Why…why…?" The old lady was watching me with trembling eagerness, her face flushed and her eyes bright with expectation."Read it aloud, my dear,"she said."I want to hear every word of it. There was never anyone I could trust…Uitlanders were hated in my young days…I could not ask anyone." "But, Auntie, don't you even know what he wrote?" The old lady looked down, troubled and shy like a child who has unwittingly done wrong. "No, dear," she said, speaking very low."You see, I never learned to read.
